[Vector] Made in Japan Volume 4 : Uchikake 「内掛け」

Made in Japan Volume 4 is here

Its time for Japanese fashion, the Uchikake 「内掛け」. Well before that, i will ask you, everyone knows Kimono right ? So Uchikake is a type of Kimono, a Kimono for a bride, in western its like a wedding gown. The form is like Furisode 「振袖」with long sleeved, but furisode only worn by unmarried woman in Seijin Shiki [The coming age ceremonies], or worn by unmarried female relatives of the bride at weddings and wedding receptions.

Using Uchikake is more complicated than furisode, there’s a lot part that need to tied inside the Kakeshita, lot of decoration and detail.  Usually the color of  uchikake is White, but there’s a lot of color beside white, such as Red, Black, Gold, and Blue, like furisode, there so much motif for uchikake, like crane, sakura, pines, flowing water, fish, and many more.

But unlike furisode, the bottom of Uchikake is padded to trail along the floor, so when the woman bride walk, they need to lift the lower part of uchikake.

Every samurai family and landlord had their characteristic in their kabuto, usually can be seen in upper part to forehead, every family put “Mon” or family crest to show the characteristic of their family.

there is a 14 types of Kabuto. Kabuto is not only use as a helmet, but it has a symbolic role. Such as this

「勝って兜のおお絞めよ」Katte Kabuto no oo shimeyo : Tighthen your kabuto after winning the war. It means don’t lower you effort after reaching your goal

[Vector Art] The Mask

Hey Ho! how are you folks? it’s me again, today i’m gonna post my new vector art about traditional mask. 3 mask from 3 country, and i will explain it one by one. So here it is

The first one is 하회 [Hahoe] (read : hahwe) mask

Hahoe mask | Yangban mask (하회 | 양반탈)

The mask that originated from Korea, this mask usually use in 하회별신굿탈놀이 [Hahwe pyeolshin gut tal nori] or “Hahoe mask dance drama” which is a shamanist right honoring communal spirits of the village. This mask is one of the cultural heritage of Korea from the Hahoe folk village in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Made from alder tree, the Anthropologist said that this mask was firstly made in the middle period of Korean dynasty [Joseon Dynasty era] by huh doryong .

There were originally 13 type of hahoe mask, 3 mask (Chongak, Byulchae, and Ttukdarital) were lost and the remaining 10 mask become national treasures of Korea. The another 10 mask are

  • 이매탈 (ime-tal) ~
  • 초랭이탈 (Chorengi-tal) ~
  • 각시탈 (Gaksi-tal) ~
  • 주지탈 (juji-tal) ~
  • 박정탈 (Bekjong-tal)
  • 할미탈 (Halmi-tal) ~
  • 충탈(Chung-tal) ~
  • 양반탈(Yangban-tal) ~
  • 선비탈(Sonbi-tal) ~
  • 부네탈 (Bune-tal)

The Second one is Topeng Klana or Klana Mask

This mask Originated from, Cirebon, Indonesia. In Indonesia we usually called as Tari Topeng Cirebon, in west java this mask is usually use in Topeng Klana Kencana Wungu dance, a depicted story of Queen Kencana Wungu of majapahit that being chased by King Minak Jingga of Blambangan. Some people misinterpreted this mask as Rahvana mask [King of Alengka in Ramayana epic story] By coincidence, the character is exactly has a same character.

In every show after all the chapter has been shown the dancer will do a ‘Ngrayuda’ , that is asking for money from the audience, the dancer will use this mask as money container, They give money without feeling there is a compulsion from the dancer. Having had enough, the dancers return to the stage and as a thank you, the dancer again, offered some Klana mask dance movements, as an extra dance.

Nyarayuda or ngarayuda is a moral message or symbol that reminds us of how to live in society. Klana was a rich king, no less of a thing, but he still feel deprived, everything was not enough, so he kept trying to take as much property regardless of whether it is right or vanity. That’s exactly the message  of nyarayuda, which means not merely begging. Life, you should give more than asked for more. That is the message to be conveyed.

The last one is Noh Mask () or Nogaku (能楽)

Noh is one of the classical drama performance from Japan. This musical drama has been performed since the 14th century, we can say that this drama and mask is the oldest musical performance in Japan. Kan’ami and his son  Zeami Motokiyo brought Noh to what is essentially its present-day form during the Muromachi Period (1336 to 1573). Noh dance it would later influence another Japanese dramatic form such as Kabuki and Butoh.

Some people believe that this mask is really live, because one Noh mask can show 3 emotions by tilting the mask up and down, even it can show more than 3 emotions if we tilting this mask left or right.

So that’s the explaination of this 3 mask, Thank you for coming

🙂

[Digital Painting] Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln (1809~1865)

Abraham LincolnAbraham Lincoln was the 16th President of The United States, born in 12 February 1809. I think he’s the one of the best president of United States, because under his leadership he proclaimed the emancipation, and abolish all slavery.

Unfortunately he was killed at 1865 at Ford’s Theater by John Wilkes Booth. Almost all Americans and the world are very respect to Abraham Lincoln, because of his thought and action.
